Re: Findlay Relationship

Dear Board Members, President Wood and Senior Faculty and Staff.

We want to thank you for your foresight and your thoughtful movement towards a merger with University of Findlay. This could not have been an easy decision, yet we all are aware of the very significant headwinds facing institutions of higher learning, including the so-called “enrollment cliff.” Bluffton has a long and proud history and over the years has changed the lives of many. It has also been an important factor in making Bluffton, Ohio the wonderful community that it has become. Nevertheless, we are aware that Bluffton University has had to take very aggressive steps to maintain its viability and growth and to provide its students with a quality, life-changing educational experience. Because the Bluffton University community has made significant sacrifices in the past, Bluffton University is a desirable merger candidate.

For a variety of reasons, including proximity and existing connections between the Findlay and Bluffton communities, University of Findlay is a good fit for Bluffton University and vice versa. The intended relationship between the two Universities, as described in the news release, includes numerous positive future actions and activities, actions and activities that will benefit and strengthen both institutions and the students and communities of both institutions. Because of the “good fit,” Bluffton University will be able continue to positively impact the Bluffton community as a whole, students will have expanded educational and career opportunities and choices, and Bluffton University and its faculty and staff will be able to continue to “prepare students of all backgrounds for life as well as vocation, for responsible citizenship, for service to all peoples and, ultimately, for the purposes of God’s universal kingdom.”

We know that because of this intended merger, some people will worry about the impact of the merger on the wonderful Bluffton community. As some of you know, our immediate and extended family includes numerous Bluffton graduates, so we understand some of the concerns and emotions involved. Nevertheless, we believe that this merger with University of Findlay will provide a solid foundation going forward for Bluffton University students and the Bluffton community. The careful crafting of the arrangement provides hope for the future of current and future students, our beloved institution, and the Bluffton community.

Thanks again for the thoughtful and creative way you have moved, and are moving, forward.

Sincerely,

Ed and Karen Diller, Bluffton College class of 1969 alumni

Ed served as Bluffton University Trustee from 1971-2001

What an incredibly positive and impactful announcement for NW Ohio! Collaboration is often talked about, but rarely is it executed in such a big way. This is truly a gift to the communities in which these institutions serve and is a great example of the sum being greater than its parts.

I hope this serves as a template for other organizations in our region to look for partnerships that can provide mutually beneficial outcomes for them and the people they serve.

Thank you President Fell, President Wood and your boards.
